The locally manufactured smartphones stand at 12.4 million as compared to the commercial imports which stand at 0.94 million.

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the local manufacturing plants have assembled 12.41 million phones during the first five months of 2022 (January-May). The locally manufactured smartphones have surpassed the commercial imports which stand at 0.94 million as compared to 12.4 million smartphones assembled locally.

Comparison of  locally manufactured smartphones with commercial imports

The commercial import of mobile phones stands at 10.26 million in 2021 as compared to 24.51 million in 2020. Likewise, the locally manufactured smartphones numbered 24.66 million in 2021 as compared to 13.05 million in 2020, the percentage of commercial imports however declined in the first five months of 2022 coming to 0.94 million.

The locally manufactured mobile phones during the calendar year 2021 stood at 24.66 million compared to 13.05 million in 2020. While the commercial imports of mobile phone handsets stood at 10.26 million in 2021 compared to 24.51 million in 2020. According to the data shared by PBS, Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $1.946 billion during the first eleven months of 2021-22 (July-May), as compared to $1.860 billion during the same period of last year.

The data shared by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) shows, that the imports of mobile phones into Pakistan decreased by 35.54 percent, on a month-on-month basis, during May 2022 and remained at $137.213 million when compared to $212.881 million imported in April 2022. While, On a year-on-year basis, mobile phones witnessed a 21.82 percent downward trend when compared to $175.501 million in May 2021.

Pakistan produces over one million Nokia feature phones

HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, has achieved the milestone of producing over one million locally assembled mobile phones in Pakistan in just after six months of setting up their assembly unit in the country. Arif Shafique, Country Manager Pakistan HMD Global, said; “Nokia Phones continue to be a favorite product among different ages of mobile phone users in Pakistan for the past many years. The demand for our handsets has been evident in the local market with the production of over one million units in a very short span of time.”
