Xiaomi to start Manufacturing Smartphones in Pakistan from January 2022, targeting annual production of around 2.5 million to 3 million.

Chinese smartphones and electronics giant,  Xiaomi is set to start manufacturing smartphones in Pakistan. The Chinese smartphone manufacturing company has partnered with a well-known assembler and distributor, Air Link, to commence local manufacturing of Xiaomi smartphones in Pakistan. In a report published in Business Recorder, Xiaomi shipped 52.8M phones during the current period, making it the world’s top-selling brand behind Samsung and Apple.

Xiaomi to begin manufacturing smartphones in Pakistan from January 2022

The company said that it’s initially targeting production of around 2.5 million to 3 million handsets annually, subject to a smooth supply chain. It’s likely to add approximately $450 million annually to the top line. The production facility will be located nearby Air Link’s existing mobile manufacturing unit at Quaid-i-Azam Industrial Estate, Kot Lakhpat, Lahore. The company expects the production facility to become operational in January 2022.

Xiaomi send a notification to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday, that reads; “Xiaomi, the global consumer electronics and smartphone giant, has joined hands with Select Technologies (Pvt) Limited (SELECT), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air Link AIRLINK as its manufacturing partner for Xiaomi mobile phones in Pakistan.” AirLink said; ” We are targeting a production of initially around 2.5 million to 3 million handsets annually subject to the smooth supply chain which is expected to add approximately $450 million annually in top-line revenue numbers and will have a material incremental impact on the EPS of the company other than the normal course of business.”

MDM authorization

According to Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA), around 26 companies have been issued an MDM Authorization. Hence, enabling them to start manufacturing smartphones in Pakistan. These companies include; Samsung, Nokia, Oppo, TECNO, QMobile, Infinix, Nokia, and others. The government of Pakistan has also introduced a mobile manufacturing policy to encourage and attract manufacturers to establish their units in Pakistan.
