The space agency has opened applications for the second mission of the Crew Health and Performance Analog (CHAPEA) experiment, inviting volunteers to live in the 3D-printed Mars Dune Alpha habitat at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Selected volunteers will spend a challenging yet fascinating 12 months in Mars Dune Alpha, simulating life on the Red Planet. The 1,700-square-foot residence promises an environment rife with “resource limitations, equipment failures, communication delays, and other environmental stressors.” This immersive experience aims to prepare individuals for the harsh realities of potential future missions to Mars.

Aspiring Martian residents are encouraged to complete NASA’s thorough questionnaire, addressing critical aspects of the simulation, including extended periods of limited communication, it poses inquiries such as, “Are you prepared to endure extended periods (up to one year) with no communication beyond your crew, subject to a minimum time delay of 20 minutes?” and, “Are you ready to partake in a year-long consumption of processed, shelf-stable spaceflight foods without having any input into the menu?” The CHAPEA experiment plays a vital role in preparing humanity for the complexities of life beyond Earth, making it a big step toward interplanetary exploration.

Requirements to Apply

Interested applicants must meet specific criteria to be considered for this extraordinary opportunity. NASA is looking for individuals aged 30-55, U.S. citizens, fluent in English, and holding a master’s degree in a STEM field such as engineering, computer science, or mathematics. Professional experience in a related field, with a minimum of 1,000 hours of piloting aircraft, is also required. Non-smokers with a willingness to endure communication delays and consume spaceflight foods for a year are sought after.

During periods when they are not engaged in simulating survival scenarios on the harsh Martian terrain, CHAPEA team members will engage in various activities. This includes conducting virtual reality spacewalk simulations, performing routine maintenance on the Mars Dune Alpha structure, overseeing robotic operations, cultivating crops, and maintaining physical fitness through regular exercise regimens. The application deadline is April 2, providing potential participants with ample time to contemplate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The selected volunteers will join the mission in 2025, contributing to NASA’s broader Artemis plans for a permanent human presence on the moon and Mars.
