Meta introduced several new features and shortcuts to its Messenger app. Messenger users can use new shortcuts to perform different tasks, such as; sending a message silently, quickly calling up a GIF while you’re chatting with your friends, responding to time-sensitive messages, and many more.

Meta’s new features and shortcuts for Facebook Messenger

Meta said; “Two of the shortcuts are available today, March 29th, according to Meta: @everyone and /silent. @everyone will let you notify everyone in a chat, which could be useful if you want to make sure to get everyone’s attention. However, if you want to send a message without pinging the whole group, you’ll be able to use the /silent shortcut.” The silent features come in handy when your friends or business associates are living in a different time zone and you don’t want to disturb them during unusual hours. The company notes that new shortcuts will be available in the coming weeks.

The other shortcuts available in a few weeks include; “/gif, /pay, /shrug, and /tableflip.” /pay will make it easier to send and receive money in Messenger chats, /gif will allow users to quickly find and send GIFs, while the /shrug and /tableflip shortcuts, which will automatically type out the ¯_(ツ)_/¯ and (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ emoticons, respectively. However, Meta also promised to roll out more new features shortcuts in the coming years.

Messenger’s split-payment feature

Last month, Meta introduced a split payment feature that allows users to divide the cost of something between two or more people. For example, dividing the purchase of a new microwave with your three roommates, or the cost of a new birthday gift for your friend. First, put all the payers in a group chat on Messenger. Then either tap the plus icon on the very bottom of the screen or tap on the name of the group and then tap Split Payments. Upon clicking the Get Started prompt, you can select whether you want to split payments with everyone in the group or exclude certain people. You will then be asked to enter the total amount of the bill which will automatically split the cost equally between the number of people you selected.
