Instagram is once again dipping into the Snapchat playbook this time, with a fresh take on real-time location sharing. The latest feature, now rolling out globally, allows users to share their live location with friends, echoing the functionality of Snapchat’s iconic Snap Map. But is this innovation or imitation?

The new location-sharing tool is dubbed by many as “Instagram’s Snap Map,” It enables users to show their last active location to select friends. But before you get flashbacks of Bitmoji avatars chilling on a digital map, let’s clarify Instagram’s version is far less animated and a lot more subtle. No bouncing characters, just clean interface design and privacy-focused customization.

The feature is opt-in only, meaning your location isn’t shared by default. Once activated, users can decide who sees their whereabouts—from all friends to Close Friends, or even specific accounts. Want to go dark while visiting a particular location or hanging out with someone? Instagram gives you the power to restrict location visibility based on context.

Let’s not pretend this is the first time Instagram has mirrored Snapchat. Stories? Friend tags? Now a Snap Map-style tool? The trend continues but it doesn’t stop there.

Instagram is also debuting Reposts, a long-awaited feature teased as far back as 2022. Users can now reshare public Reels and feed posts, which will appear in a dedicated repost tab on their profile. The platform ensures creators get credit, while reposters can include personal notes for context.

And to top it off, a new Friends tab in Reels is making its global debut. This allows users to view public content that their friends have engaged with. Whether you’re nosy or just curious, this gives a peek into the digital lives of your circle.

Instagram’s update blends the social voyeurism of Snapchat with the content ecosystem of Meta’s broader vision. While critics may call it derivative, users might appreciate the added controls and integration.

So, is it a Snap Map clone or a thoughtful evolution? Maybe both. But in the ever-blurring world of social media, who’s keeping track?
