Pakistan’s Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) and the country’s additional nuclear scientists have won awards at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), according to a statement published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
These awards were jointly bestowed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations recognizing Pakistan’s improvement in the application of nuclear technology for the accomplishment of sustainable development goals(SDGs).
Awards won by the nuclear scientists:
The awards include; the Outstanding Achievement Award to Pakistan’s Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB), the Team Achievement Award to a group of four scientists in the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) for working in the same area, and another award tagged ‘Young Scientist Award’, was bagged by a PAEC scientist for work in plant mutation breeding and similar technologies.
The winners will be presented with certificates during the IAEA’s 65th General Conference in September 2021.
The foreign ministry’s official statement reads, “Extensive civilian nuclear applications in Pakistan are directly rendering to the well-being of the people and national advancement in the regions of public health, medicine, agriculture, industry, and nuclear power generation.”

The office of the foreign ministry appreciated Pakistan’s advancement in technology. The statement further reads, “These awards are a distinctive characteristic of Pakistan’s evolution in nuclear technology and undertakings for the accomplishment of Sustainable Development Goals, particularly food and security.”
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, a collection of 17 interlinked global goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a global call to action to cease poverty, conserve the planet, and assure that by 2030 all people relish peace and happiness. As the UN mission statement reads, “A strategy to achieve a better and more endurable future for all nations and the world by 2030.”
