WhatsApp is once again reshaping the way we communicate. The popular messaging app is testing a new feature that allows users to leave voicemail-style messages when their calls go unanswered. This addition could be a game-changer for people who often struggle to get their message across when someone misses their call.
The update, spotted in WhatsApp beta version 2.25.23.21 for Android, introduces a “Record voice message” button directly in the call menu. If a call isn’t picked up, users will now see three options: “Call again,” “Cancel,” and the brand-new voicemail feature.
Instead of hanging up and then going into the chat to manually record a message, callers can instantly leave a voice note without leaving the call screen. This function is also mirrored in the chat window of the missed call, ensuring that the process feels natural and effortless.
WhatsApp has long supported voice messages, but this new voicemail-style shortcut eliminates unnecessary steps and saves time. It’s especially handy for situations where an urgent update or quick instruction needs to be conveyed without waiting for the other person to call back.
Currently, this feature is limited to select Android beta testers. Meta hasn’t confirmed when it will reach a wider audience, but given WhatsApp’s track record with beta features, it’s likely only a matter of time before it becomes a standard part of the app.
If rolled out globally, this update could blur the line between traditional phone calls and app-based communication, making WhatsApp an even stronger contender in replacing standard calling features.
