Pakistan is gearing up for a major leap in connectivity, with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirming that 5G services are on the way and satellite internet is not far behind. PTA Chairman Major General (Retd) Hafeez ur Rehman stressed that embracing fast-evolving technologies is essential, but it must be done with public trust, strong privacy safeguards, and robust cybersecurity in place.
Speaking at a cybersecurity workshop and awards ceremony, the PTA chief revealed that the groundwork for Pakistan’s 5G launch is well underway, noting that while the world moves towards 6G, with China already in talks about it, Pakistan is ready to take the next big step. He highlighted that advanced technologies like artificial intelligence offer powerful benefits but are also being exploited for scams, fake videos, and financial fraud, making cybersecurity a top priority in the 5G era.
In a significant update, Hafeez ur Rehman confirmed that regulations for the Pakistan Satellite Internet Regulatory Body (PSARB) have been finalized, clearing the path for satellite internet services to debut in the country soon. He reiterated PTA’s commitment to protecting citizens’ data, ensuring safe internet use, and safeguarding privacy across both telecom and social media platforms.
Meanwhile, PTA Director General Cyber Vigilance Dr. Mukaram Khan shared that Pakistan has successfully repelled cyber threats, including attempts from India, with no major breaches in the telecom sector. The country’s telecom cybersecurity rating now stands at an impressive 8.8 out of 10, backed by regular third-party audits of all operators.
With 5G on the horizon and satellite internet close behind, Pakistan is positioning itself for a future where ultra-fast, secure, and widespread connectivity could transform the way citizens live, work, and communicate.
