Two-step verification feature

Explaining the two-step verification feature, WABetaInfo said that two-step verification feature adds more security to your account. When you log into WhatsApp after inserting the 6-digit registration code, an additional code (called PIN) will be required. It further added; “When you configure the two-step verification, you can also enter your email address to help you restore your WhatsApp account if you forget your PIN. In case you cannot log into WhatsApp because you don’t remember your PIN, you can reset it immediately by requesting a reset link.”

The Whatsapp news tracker website advised to never use your phone number when you configure the two-step verification for your mail address, but you should use authentication applications as criminals using techniques of SIM swapping, are able to steal a phone number and assign it to a new SIM card if they get their hands on the private information of a user.

Best authentication applications

WABetaInfo listed some authentication applications to generate token authentication code:

  1. Google Authenticator: it’s one of the most popular authentication apps but it has no automatic recovery backups.
  2. 1Password: it is more than a simple authentication app, that offers additional features to save your credentials.
  3. Authy: This is the best authentication app that includes encrypted backups, but you have to disable multi-device to prevent others from logging into Authy by using your phone number. The best part is that you can also lock the app with a PIN or biometric authentication.
