Google has inked a strategic alliance with Reddit to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, the collaboration, announced by Reddit on Thursday, entails providing Google with “more efficient ways to train models,” marking a considerable milestone in the tech giants’ partnership. The Google x Reddit partnership is a win-win for both as Google gains valuable AI training data, and Reddit strategically positions itself for future revenue generation and potential market expansion. ‘We’ve had a longstanding relationship with Reddit for many years, and today we’re sharing a number of ways that we’re deepening our partnership across the company,’ said Google.

Google x Reddit Partnership: Empowering Search with Vertex AI

As part of the deal, Google gains access to Reddit’s data API, offering real-time content from the expansive Reddit platform empowering Google to efficiently tap into Reddit’s vast content corpus, enabling the tech giant to explore innovative ways of presenting Reddit’s content across its diverse array of products. “We’re pleased to announce a new Cloud partnership that enables Reddit to integrate new AI-powered capabilities using Vertex AI. Reddit intends to use Vertex AI to enhance search and other capabilities on the Reddit platform,” said Google in a blog post.

Beyond data exchange, the partnership extends Reddit’s access to Vertex AI, Google’s cutting-edge AI-powered service designed to enhance search result optimization. Despite this, Reddit ensures that the collaboration doesn’t alter its data API terms, maintaining restrictions on commercial usage without proper approval. “With the Reddit Data API, Google will now have efficient and structured access to fresher information, as well as enhanced signals that will help us better understand Reddit content and display, train on, and otherwise use it in the most accurate and relevant ways,” said Google.

Future Revenue Streams for Reddit

The alliance is a testament to the evolving dynamics between Google and Reddit, which have not always seen eye to eye. Reddit had previously expressed concerns over potential misuse of its data by companies for AI training, even threatening to block Google from crawling its site. However, this new collaboration reflects a major shift in their relationship. The partnership follows reports of Reddit securing a $60 million training deal with an unnamed AI company, showcasing Reddit’s commitment to diversifying its income streams. CEO Steve Huffman’s earlier statement about exploring data licensing as a potential revenue stream aligns with this deal.
